Duckville Hut
The place
Small standard Urewera hut at 486 m, four bunks (3 mattresses), on the true left bank of the Te Weramata Stream, in the Ikawhenua Range just outside Murupara on the Galatea side (Bay of Plenty / Te Urewera, North Island, New Zealand). Tank water and a wood burner, in generally good condition: recently re-clad and fitted with new windows, with the open fireplace rebuilt. DOC triangles mark the trail from the upstream bank of the forks clearing; follow the Ohutu Stream upstream for ~2 hours to a hunters' fly camp, then leave the watercourse to climb onto the ridge to the hut. Important: check before departure — Te Urewera (Ngāi Tūhoe) has been decommissioning many huts since 2022.
Getting there
Follow the Ohutu Stream upstream ~2h from the forks clearing near Murupara.
The setting
Ikawhenua Range, Te Urewera; status to be verified (Ngāi Tūhoe decommissioning).
