The place

Basic 2-bunk bivouac at 871 m in Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia / Clarence (Marlborough, NZ). Free. Access via Blind Saddle Road from the Kahutara Bridge car park (25 km inland from Kaikoura on SH1). Vehicle access by arrangement with Colin Nimmo (Muzzle Station, +64 3 319 5791) and a contribution towards maintenance costs; winter closures apply. No DOC track: self-sufficient navigation with map/compass/GPS required. Dangerous river crossings: do not cross when in flood.
