The place

Highest bivouac in Kaweka Forest Park, managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC), at 1,480 meters elevation on the Makahu Spur (Hawke's Bay, North Island, New Zealand). Built in 1968. Water tank, pit toilet; pack out all rubbish and food when leaving. Free access. Approach from the Makahu Saddle car park in about 1h20 via a well-marked trail up the Makahu Spur. Exposed alpine site: strong northwest winds and abrupt changes from the south bringing heavy rain and snow in winter.
