Diggers Hut
The place
Historic backcountry hut set at 1045 m in Central Otago (South Island, New Zealand), in the area of the former Maniototo Plain goldfields where prospectors ("diggers") worked claims in the second half of the 19th century. The name recalls this mining tradition — the Kyeburn Diggings are located on the Maniototo Plain in Central Otago. A basic, open-access building, a rustic stopover for hikers travelling through Oteake Conservation Park and other protected areas of Otago. An exceptional mineral, desert-like Central Otago landscape — rocky valleys carved by former streams, dry tussock grasslands, archaeological heritage from the New Zealand gold rush (1860s-70s). Iconic wildlife: hare, rabbit, New Zealand falcon (kārearea), kea, possum. Managed by DOC (Department of Conservation) — check exact conditions at doc.govt.nz before any trip.
