The place
Basic DOC hut with 6 bunks at 650 m in Ruahine Forest Park (Hawke's Bay, NZ), near Koau Stream. Built by the Tressider family in memory of their daughter Diane, a frequent hiker in the area. Renovated in April 2023. Access via a private road through Big Hill Station, permit allocated by ballot, then ~10 km along No Man's Road to the park boundary, then a 1-hour trail. The crossing between Dianes Hut and Ikawatea Forks Hut is over private land: written permission from the landowner is required in advance.
