The place

Shelter ("Turk", emergency hut) of the Mountain Turk Club on the Mahu Whenua Traverse, an alpine traverse between 600 and 2,056 metres mainly on Coronet Peak Station and public conservation land (Otago, South Island, New Zealand). Lowest Turk on the traverse at 900 metres elevation, frequently below the snowline in winter. Positioning chosen for safety rather than route convenience: exhausted people tend to descend, and it would have been dangerous to require 12+ km of walking or 500 m of climbing to reach a shelter from the pass. Volunteer-run site, free access for the traverse, minimal equipment.
