The place
Standard DOC hut with 6 bunks at 500 m in Ruahine Forest Park (Hawke's Bay, NZ). Built in 1959 by the NZ Forest Service. The name comes from a historical incident: several deer cullers' dogs died there of distemper. Stream water and open fireplace (cooking). Regulated access: permit and key required to use No Man's Road through Big Hill Station, allocated by ballot. From the access point, 2 hr walk / 3 km. No booking: Standard or Backcountry Hut Pass ticket.
