Dasler Bivouac
The place
Basic 2-bunk DOC bivouac at 1,220 m in Ruataniwha Conservation Park (Canterbury, NZ), among the highest culling huts in the Twizel area and possibly in Canterbury. Built in 1966 by the NZ Forest Service (formerly Cullers Biv) for wild animal control shooters. 2×3 m structure, corrugated iron roof, timber frame, original melthoid lining (possibly transported in two sections). Free. Access 7-8 h / 21 km from Ram Hill car park via the Hopkins Valley (Lake Ohau Road). DOC maintains it to preserve its historic fabric while keeping it open for recreation.
A bit of history
