The place
Italian bivouac at 2440 m, about 4 hours' walk from Chiappera di Acceglio (Val Maira, Piedmont). Accessible from the source of the Maira, just past the hamlet of Saretto. Memorial to Danilo Sartore of Santa Vittoria, a military biathlete and mountaineer who died at 22 in 2003 in a climbing fall. Recent wooden bivouac with a red metal roof, opened in 2011. Equipment: mattresses, blankets, cooking utensils, solar-panel lighting. Always open. Managed since 2025 by the CAI Alba section.

On the route of the Via Alpina (waymarked S16), very pleasant, clean, breathtaking view. Top-class bivouac! Given altitude 2440m, not far from the Col du Sautron, on the East side. The website states: The bivouac was designed as a makeshift shelter, so accessible to everyone, and above all it is open all year round. The bivouac was commissioned and built by Danilo Sartore's parents, then given to the municipality of Acceglio, which owns and is responsible for it. It is a bivouac dedicated to Danilo, who died in the mountains; it was inaugurated in 2011.
