Curtis Memorial Hut
The place
A Standard Hut of the New Zealand Department of Conservation, located in Hakatere Conservation Park (Canterbury region, South Island), on the banks of the Havelock River opposite the confluence with the Forbes. A bare-bones hut with four bunks with mattresses, heating, a dry toilet, and tap water (untreated, must be boiled). No booking: first come, first served. No DOC trail leads directly to the hut: the trip requires self-sufficient navigation with map, compass and GPS through the wild Rangitata basin. Ideal for multi-day tramps in the Te Kāhui Kaupeka, at the junction of the Rakaia and Rangitata.
Getting there
No marked trail: self-sufficient approach via the Havelock River from Mesopotamia Station or the Erewhon Road end. Map/compass/GPS navigation required.
