The place

Basic hut managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in Te Kahui Kaupeka Conservation Park, south Canterbury (South Island, New Zealand). Free access, no booking. A stage on the Two Thumb Track, a section that forms part of the Te Araroa long-distance trail: Te Araroa walkers must hold the Te Araroa Trail Pass. Exposed route in a high valley, with several unimproved stream crossings: exercise caution during floods, wait for water levels to drop, and know stream-crossing techniques; check NIWA flow data before setting out.
