The place
DOC "Standard" category hut at 57 m on the West Coast (South Island, New Zealand), in the Haast, Paringa and Moeraki Rivers area. The first hut on the Haast-Paringa Cattle Track, a historic 3 to 4 day crossing. Eight bunks, heating, mattresses, dry toilets, water from the stream (untreated, must be boiled). Access is about a 2-hour DOC walk along a flat but adventurous trail from SH6 just north of Haast. No bookings — first come, first served. Rates: NZD 10 adult / NZD 5 child / free for ages 0-4 (Standard Hut Ticket in the honesty box or Backcountry Hut Pass). A typical stop in the sub-tropical wet rainforest of South Westland.
