Cope Hut
The place
Cope Hut is a historic hut on the Bogong High Plains (Alpine National Park, Victoria, Australia), at 1,689 m elevation. Built in 1929 by the Ski Club of Victoria on a proposal by Robert "Wilkie" Wilkinson, designed by chief architect Evan Smith of the Victorian Public Works Department, funded by the State Tourist Committee. Construction was supervised by Bill Spargo (builders: Bill and Jack Barrington, Martin Lawler). Materials were carted to Dibbins then sledged onto the High Plains. The largest hut of its era on the High Plains, nicknamed "The Menzies of the High Plains" for its size and comfort. Listed on the National Trust in 1988. Today reserved for emergency use only, 400 m from the car park on the Great Alpine Road. Managed by Parks Victoria under the Australian Alps National Parks program.
