The place
Comet Hut in Ruahine Forest Park, Waipawa/Ongaonga sector (Hawke's Bay, North Island, New Zealand), at 855 m altitude, on the eastern slope of the Ruahine Range. Part of a continuous Ruahine NZ cluster (batches 231-311, ~10 entries). A historic trampers' hut ("Comet" being a personal or astronomical nickname), in an area of Nothofagus beech forest. Heritage of Ngāti Kahungunu (the 2nd-largest Māori iwi, 82,000 people) and of the Napier sealers (European sealers who settled the area in the 1830s).
