The place
Unstaffed CAI Omegna bivouac set at 2420 m in the Lepontine Alps (Piedmont, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola), very close to the border with the canton of Valais (Switzerland). Built in 1974, dedicated to the memory of young mountaineers Luigi "Sip" Combi and Piero Lanza, both killed in an accident on the Marinelli couloir on 19 July 1970. Comfortable wooden structure comprising an indoor kitchen equipped with gas and some utensils, and a dormitory with 12 sleeping places plus 8 emergency places. Unstaffed bivouac, but with a gas stove, crockery and blankets available; water may be absent in autumn. Strategic position for the ascent of the surrounding peaks and for the crossing to Binn (canton of Valais) via the Passo Cornera (2536 m). Classic access from the Alpe Devero (Baceno) heading towards Piedimonte, to the west; alternative route from Switzerland via the Passo Cornera. Exceptional mineral setting of the high Lepontine Alps: subalpine grassland, glacial lakes, panorama over the Monte Rosa massif and the Italian-Swiss border.
