Coldwater Hut

The place

Basic DOC hut at 620 m on the shore of Lake Rotoiti, Nelson Lakes National Park (Nelson-Tasman). Bunks on shared platforms with mattresses, open fireplace, tank or lake water, jetty. Camping area outside. Bring a sleeping bag, cookware, toilet paper and fire lighters. Fee NZD 10 adult and NZD 5 for children aged 5-17 per night, free below that, payable via standard tickets or the annual Backcountry Hut Pass. No booking. Walking access: 3 h 30 from St Arnaud via the Lakeside Track, 2 h 30 from the end of Mount Robert Road; or by water taxi from St Arnaud (jetty in front of the hut). Biosecurity cleaning stations against the invasive lindavia algae present in Lakes Rotoiti and Rotoroa. Walks from the hut: 2 h return to the footbridge over the Travers River, 1 h 30 to 2 h to Whisky Falls.
