The place

DOC hostel at 836 m at the lower end of the Cobb Reservoir, in Kahurangi National Park (Nelson/Tasman, NZ), 38 km from Upper Tākaka via a narrow, winding, unsealed road. Capacity for 10 people in separate rooms (bunk beds and one double bed). Electric stove, hot water, pots, cooking utensils, dishes. Shower, flush toilet, fireplace, fridge-freezer. Exclusive-use rate: $92/night (until 30 June 2026). Online booking (until 30 June 2027), same-day up to 8 pm, no walk-in places held. Phone/visitor centre: +$10. Untreated water from the nearby stream. Wasps and bumblebees Feb-May. Snow can close the ridge road in winter. A go-to base for tramping, fishing, and nature study in New Zealand's second-largest national park.
