The place
Clyde Hut in Westland Tai Poutini National Park, Whataroa/Franz Josef area (West Coast, South Island, New Zealand), at 709 m elevation, on the flank of Franz Josef Glacier. Continuous Westland cluster (batches 230-348). Pre-glacial DOC hut (surname "Clyde", a common Scottish name in the NZ Central Otago Rush of 1861, Scots 25%), in a zone of rimu-kahikatea podocarp (Dacrycarpus dacrydioides) and near Franz Josef Glacier (Ka Roimata o Hine Hukatere, Māori "the tears of Hine Hukatere weeping for the lost man Wawe", 12 km retreat since the 1980 peak, climate change accelerating to 1.2 km since 2018), Kāi Tahu heritage (Arahura jade/pounamu, Ngāi Tahu monopoly under the Claims Settlement Act 1998).
