The place

Old granite shepherd's hut located at 1620 m on the south-west slope of the Sierra de Gredos (province of Ávila, Spain), beside the Arroyo de Malillo or de la Solana stream. Single-storey rectangular building, with no beds or furniture — you sleep directly on the granite floor, so bring a sleeping mat. The interior has room for about fifteen people, two tables with benches and a working fireplace. Free, unstaffed shelter: cleanliness depends on users and it's first-come, first-served. Serves as a base for the traverse to the Laguna del Barco and the ascent of La Covacha (2399 m). Classic access from Puerto Castilla via Los Vinagrales.
