Chapelle Sainte Radegonde
The place
Historic chapel converted into an unstaffed hiking shelter, set at 950 m in the municipality of Vennes (Doubs, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté), overlooking the Val de Vennes. The first chapel was built in 1541, originally erected to protect the population from a plague epidemic. Destroyed during the French Revolution, it was rebuilt in 1854 in its current form. The building serves as a rustic unstaffed shelter with no warden. Classic access from Vennes: head toward Roche Barchey, then turn toward Plambois via Vieux Château — the chapel is just below the summit at the foot of the rocks. An ideal spot for a picnic with a panoramic view over the Val de Vennes and the Haut-Doubs plateaus. Forested, heritage-rich setting typical of central Doubs: beech-fir forests, limestone cliffs of the Jura karst, trails linking villages of the Franche-Comté. Iconic wildlife: roe deer, wild boar, Jura chamois, Eurasian lynx (reintroduced), peregrine falcon on the nearby cliffs.
