Bivacco Cesare Fiorio

The place
High-altitude bivouac at 2725 m in the commune of Courmayeur, in the Val Ferret at the foot of the Mont Dolent (Mont-Blanc massif, Italian side, Aosta Valley). Dedicated to the memory of Cesare Fiorio, a Turin mountaineer who died in 1931, one of the founding members of the Italian Academic Alpine Club (CAAI). The old metal structure dates from 1952; a new wooden building with a zinc roof was added in 1973 next to the old one, offering 24 beds in a more spacious and comfortable setting. Serves as a base for the normal route on Mont Dolent (PD/PD+ grade). Access from Courmayeur via Arnouva in about 5h30 round trip for 1050 m of ascent, passing through glacial moraine and marked rocky slopes.
Getting there
Départ d'Arnouva (~1 760-1 769 m), dans le Val Ferret (Courmayeur). Suivre le sentier balisé n°24 le long de la moraine du glacier du Pré de Bar, puis monter par un passage raide sur terrain schisteux jusqu'au Petit Col Ferret ; peu avant le col, un sentier bifurque à gauche à mi-pente et contourne un éperon rocheux jusqu'aux deux bivouacs Fiorio. Dénivelé d'environ 1 040-1 050 m, difficulté E/EE.
The setting
Le bivouac est situé à 2 810 m, en Val Ferret, au pied du Mont Dolent, en bordure du glacier du Pré de Bar, dans le massif du Mont-Blanc (Alpes grées). Point de départ pour l'ascension du Mont Dolent (3 823 m) par la voie normale. Deux structures coexistent sur le site : l'ancien bivouac (tôle et bois, 1952) et le nouveau bivouac (bois, toiture zinc, 1973), tous deux dédiés à la mémoire de Cesare Fiorio, alpiniste turinois mort en 1931, membre fondateur du CAAI.
