The place

Large DOC "Serviced" category hut with 25 bunks at 625 m, in a vast grassy clearing beside the Whirinaki River, within the Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park (East Coast / Bay of Plenty, North Island, New Zealand). Set within a beech forest, it has sleeping platforms and a large kitchen equipped with a good stove. No regular firewood supply — bring a backup plan. The only "Serviced" hut on the Whirinaki circuit and the surrounding Te Hoe Circuit. Accessible from Plateau Road (Taupo side) or River Road (near Murupara). The Whirinaki Track is the park's flagship experience, easy and suited to moderate-level hikers: beech forest then lowland podocarps, views of the crystal-clear Whirinaki water, sightings of blue ducks (whio), tui, and robins.
