DOC hut, "Standard" category, at 426 m in Te Urewera, Hawke's Bay region (North Island, New Zealand), with 8 bunks. Important: since 2022, Te Uru Taumatua (Ngāi Tūhoe) has been removing 44 huts from the Te Urewera backcountry; some are due to be replaced by new purpose-built structures. Check current status before setting out, via the Ngāi Tūhoe website or by stopping at the Te Urewera Visitor Centre. Not to be confused with the Waiau Hut in the St James Conservation Area (Canterbury), built in 2018 thanks to an anonymous donation on the Waiau Pass Track.
