The place
Historic 4-bunk miner's hut at 500 m on the Wangapeka Track, Kahurangi National Park (Nelson/Tasman, NZ). Depression-era hut built around 1935 by Cecil King from red beech timber cut from a single tree in the clearing. Simple structure: single room of hewn timber, lean-to, stone chimney, beech-pole framing, timber cladding and iron roof over shingles. Cecil King maintained the building for 46 years, until his death in 1982. Restored in 1991 by Max Polglaze; DOC continues to preserve its historic character. Free.
