The place
Staffed shelter at 2,478 m at the foot of the Piton des Neiges, the highest point in the Indian Ocean, on the island of Réunion. Managed by the Association des Gestionnaires des Gîtes de Montagne (AGMM), it is the obligatory stop for hikers heading up to watch the sunrise from the summit. Forty-eight beds in four dormitories, expandable to seventy-two with temporary tents. No heating, temperatures near freezing at night, water is scarce (bottles sold on site). Drying room, cold-water showers, cash payment only.

Getting there
Access from Le Bloc (Cirque de Cilaos): 1,150 m of ascent, 50 m of descent, about 4 km, allow 3 h 30. Other starting points possible from Pas de Bellecombe.
