The place

Basic DOC hut with 4 bunks at 14 m in Fiordland National Park (NZ), accessible by boat or via an unmarked route from George Sound via the Overlander Ridge and Stillwater Valley (for experienced trampers only). Free. The only surviving example of a classic single-room corrugated-iron Fiordland hut. Boats: Clean Vessel Pass required (Fiordland Marine Pathway Plan).

A bit of history

The last physical remnant of the 1949 New Zealand-American expedition on the Fiordland wapiti population. Built using surplus materials from the expedition, then used as an emergency supply depot for floatplanes until the 1960s.
