Casino Hut

The place

Former backcountry hut at Te Urewera (North Island, New Zealand). Te Uru Taumatua (Tūhoe) began removing 44 backcountry huts from Te Urewera in 2022; some are being replaced by new dedicated structures. No toilets or water remain at decommissioned sites. For this area, visitors must now travel fully self-sufficient (tent, sleeping bag, distress beacon strongly recommended as mobile coverage is limited). Current status of Casino Hut to be confirmed with Ngāi Tūhoe (+64 6 837 3803) — the hut has likely been decommissioned as part of the program.
