Cabaña de la Vega de Liordes

The place

Small refuge at 1860 m in the central massif of the Picos de Europa, at the Vega de Liordes, one of the most picturesque plateaus in Spain. Historic relic: the Vega de Liordes was the site of intense mining activity focused on zinc extraction, whose mineralisation is linked to a major fault crossing the area; peak operations occurred in the second half of the 19th century, continuing through to the mid-20th century. Near the Collado de Liordes stand the ruins of the mining casetón that housed the foremen and those of a washing plant. A drawing of the Casetón de las Minas de Liordes dated 1891 is held in the archives, based on a photograph by the Comte de Saint-Saud. Former miners'/shepherds' cabin about 5 m long and 2 m wide, still visible when circling the Vega de Liordes basin.
