Cascina Le Barbe
The place
Unstaffed refuge set up in a large room of the Le Barbe farmhouse (~812 m, DB lists 853 m) within the Acquerino-Cantagallo Nature Reserve (Tuscany — not Piedmont). Fireplace, wooden tables and benches, free access. Outside: tables and benches on the adjoining meadows, fresh water spring. The building belonged to the Luogomano estate of the Guicciardini family, who owned four farms in the area; in the last century, several families lived there, growing wheat, barley, potatoes and rye, and raising sheep and cows. Access from Luogomano via the forest track in ~2h30, or from the Passo degli Acandoli (southern boundary of the Reserve) in ~2h.
