Cascade Hut
The place
Cascade Hut in Kosciuszko National Park, Jindabyne/Berridale area (Snowy Mountains, New South Wales, Australia), at 1505 m elevation, on the Snowy High Plains alpine plateau. Part of the continuous Kosciuszko cluster (batches 240-361). A historic cattlemen's hut (1830s-1940s; the name "Cascade" refers to a nearby waterfall) near the Cascade Fire Trail, in an area of Eucalyptus pauciflora (snow gum, wind-twisted) and Poa costiniana (alpine snowgrass) + Kosciuszko, 2228 m, the continent's highest point + the Snowy Hydro Scheme (1949-1974: 16 dams, 7 power stations, 4000 MW, a post-war project built by around 100,000 workers, many European displaced persons, that transformed and industrialised NSW) + the 2003 Alpine fires, mega-fires that burned 1.7 million hectares and killed 4 people + the heritage of the Yuin-Ngarigo Aboriginal people, present for 40,000 years, with Bogong moth (Agrotis infusa) summer migrations going back millennia.
