The place

Former mountain pasture at ~950 m at the foot of Monte Sillara, in the municipality of Bagnone (Massa-Carrara, Tuscany), on the border between the Ligurian and Tuscan Apennines, near the hamlet of Iera. Eight small stone buildings roofed with slate slabs where shepherds once led their flocks. Some are being restored to serve as shelters for hikers. Classic loop route: Iera (542 m) - Capanne di Garbia - Bivio Tornini (1231 m) - Compione - Iera. Good basic base in the Tuscan-Ligurian Apennines, mid-altitude fauna and flora.
