Capanna Volta
The place
A refuge at 2212 m in the upper Val dei Ratti, western Rhaetian Alps (Sondrio, Lombardy). A building from the early 20th century built by the CAI Como section, whose management has been handed over on a long-term loan to the local CAI Novate Mezzola-Verceia section. Now open continuously, in the style of Swiss huts: no need to collect the key in advance. About 40 sleeping places, kitchen with water, wood stove, small honesty box for overnight stays and refreshments. A refuge offering a real journey back in time, with original posters, decorations, crockery, utensils, coffee machines, maps, books and slippers still in place. Access in about 4 hours from Piazzo, above Verceia (Valchiavenna). A key stop on the Sentiero Bonatti, linked to the Bivacco Primalpia and the Rifugio Frasnedo.
