The place
Refuge at 1432 m in the municipality of Tarvisio (Friuli-Venezia Giulia), in the Julian Alps — not in Liguria as a name evoking the Cinque Terre might suggest. Established in the early 20th century as a hunting lodge, one of twelve built by Frederick Augustus III, the last King of Saxony, in the Tarvisio forest. An accomplished mountaineer and keen hunter, the King leased about 19,000 hectares of forest from the Carinthian Religious Fund and stayed there at least three times a year for hunting. Now also known as the Rifugio Brunner, the shelter is unstaffed and has no indoor sleeping places — it is used as a daytime stop and emergency shelter. In 2010, thanks to the interest of the CAI Tarvisio section and regional contributions, it was thoroughly restored. A stop on trail 629 "Re di Sassonia", which links up with the Rifugio Guido Corsi.
