Bivacco Amici della Montagna

The place

Legendary refuge at 3160 m on the Cima Lagoscuro, in the Adamello-Presanella Alps (Brescia province, Lombardy). Also known as Bivacco Amici della Montagna or Capanna Faustinelli. Originally a WWI-era military barracks, restored in the 1950s by the mountaineer Giovanni Faustinelli (1908-?), born in Pezzo (Ponte di Legno), who turned the structure into a residence where he'd spend up to ten months a year. From 1958, he methodically rebuilt the old barracks; in September 1970, as he was finishing the work, an unexploded shell detonated and tore off his leg. His legacy is carried on today by the "Amici della Capanna di Lagoscuro" association, which manages the site and serves coffee and tea in high summer season, funded by donations. One section is locked, the other is open with 2 seats. Accessible via the Via Ferrata Sentiero dei Fiori from the Passo del Tonale.
