Cabane supérieure du Bérard

Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur · France0 mCloseVerified listing

The place

Unstaffed hut set at 2,390 m in the Bérard valley (Ubaye, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence / Hautes-Alpes), just below the Pas de Reverdillon. A remarkable location in the high Ubaye-Parpaillon valleys, at the foot of the Grand Bérard (3,046 m) — one of the emblematic peaks of the Ubaye. A base for alpine and winter ascents (ski touring and mountaineering) of the Grand Bérard and the Chalanche (2,984 m), from Sainte-Anne-la-Condamine or La Condamine-Châtelard (Les Pras). A basic, freely accessible building, with the minimalist equipment typical of Ubaye's high-altitude huts. Exceptional mineral setting of the high Camuna valleys: subalpine grasslands, permanent snow, panorama over the Cottian Alps and the Franco-Italian border. Emblematic wildlife: chamois, ibex (reintroduced), marmot, golden eagle, bearded vulture, rock ptarmigan. An exceptional high-altitude stopover, neighbouring the Cabane de Tronchet (2,390 m) and the Cabane du Petit Parpaillon (2,148 m).
