The place
A small unstaffed hut at 730 m in the Vercors-Diois massif (Drôme), in good condition from the outside, fitted with a wood stove or fireplace. Currently closed; despite its evocative name, the hut is not actually painted red. Located on the edge of the Parc naturel régional du Vercors, in the limestone mid-mountain area of the Diois. A forest setting typical of the eastern foothills of the Vercors: downy oak groves, beech-fir forests, dry Mediterranean-type meadows. Iconic wildlife: roe deer, wild boar, chamois (reintroduced in the Vercors), golden eagle, griffon vulture, peregrine falcon. Classic access via yellow and green waymarked trails in the Vercors-Diois sector. Viewing stop only — no use of the interior possible due to it being closed.
