Cabane du Chemin de la Pia
The place
Spectacular basic shelter set at 1280 m on the Chemin de la Pia (Vercors massif, commune of Saint-Martin-en-Vercors, Drôme), fixed above the void by cables anchored to the cliff. Very exposed feeling — the shelter looks ready to tip into the ravine despite the wires holding it to the rock face. Maximum interior height: 1.80 m on the upper sleeping platform and 1.60 m on the lower one, capacity for 2 people. Classic access via the very beautiful but vertiginous Chemin de la Pia which leads to the Pas de Saint-Martin (paragliding takeoff zone) — the first section crosses steep, mossy rocks where caution is required, especially on the crossing of the Pas de Saint-Martin after the hut. Exceptional view of the Vierge du Vercors, a rock monolith detached from the cliff. Commanding position over the Plaine d'Herbouilly and the eastern cliffs of the Vercors. Exceptional mineral setting of the southern Vercors cliffs — for use by experienced hikers with no fear of heights only.
