Cabane du Carton
The place
Unguarded hut at 2290 m near the Sommet du Carton, close to the Grand Coyer (Mercantour-Argentera, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence). Confirmed closed by the ONF (French National Forestry Office) on 29 November 2024 following damage — currently locked. A notable spot in the southern high valleys of the Mercantour, near the Grand Coyer (2693 m) and the routes linking Annot, Saint-André-les-Alpes and Castellane. A mineral landscape in the southern foothills of the Mercantour: larch trees, subalpine grassland, views over the Préalpes de Haute-Provence and the Mercantour's border with Italy. Emblematic wildlife: chamois (a substantial population in the Mercantour), ibex (reintroduced in the 1990s), marmot, golden eagle, bearded vulture, griffon vulture. At present, no use is possible — check with the ONF (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence departmental unit) before heading out.
