Cabane de Stor Aften
The place
Unstaffed cabin built by volunteers, set at 1595 m in the Aravis range (Haute-Savoie), in the Col de la Croix Fry area (municipality of Manigod or La Clusaz). Basic condition: the cabin lacks a door and windows, letting snow and wind inside. Equipment: 4 mattresses in poor condition (moldy), generally dirty interior, large outdoor terrace, fireplace area with a firewood store. A rustic stop reserved for emergency shelter use — not recommended for a comfortable overnight stay. Standard access from the Col de la Croix Fry via a path leading toward the ridges, then branching left through the woods. Mineral and forest setting typical of the Aravis: spruce, beech woods, summer pastures, panorama over the range's iconic summits (Pointe Percée 2752 m, Étale, Aiguille de Borderan). Iconic wildlife: chamois, marmot, rock ptarmigan, golden eagle, bearded vulture (regularly present since its reintroduction).
Getting there
From Col de la Croix Fry via a path toward the ridges, then branch left into the woods. Degraded condition — emergency shelter.
