The place

Unstaffed hut set at 1180 m in the Lozère department (southern Massif Central), in the Mont Lozère or Cévennes area. Remarkable location at the heart of the Cévennes National Park (created in 1970, UNESCO biosphere since 1985) — France's first inhabited national park. A basic, freely accessible building, a mid-mountain stop amid the causses, moorlands and beech forests of the Cévennes. A forest and pastoral landscape typical of the Massif Central: chestnut groves (remnants of medieval "bouygues"), old beech forests, orchid meadows on limestone, and the exceptional scenery of the UNESCO-listed "Causses and Cévennes, Mediterranean agro-pastoral cultural landscape." Emblematic wildlife: golden eagle, griffon vulture (reintroduced in the Cévennes), capercaillie, grey wolf (spontaneous return). A possible stop on the Cévennes National Park trails (GR 7, GR 70 Stevenson Trail, Robert Louis Stevenson Trail) that cross the massif.
