Cabane de Coumeders (dite Refuge Rouge)

The place

Metal shelter painted green but nicknamed the "Red Refuge", at 1440 m in the Sabarthès massif (Ariège, Couserans). Capacity of 4 people all year round, indoor fireplace, table, firewood and water nearby, but no bedding provided. In the 1970s, a dry-stone cabin with a stone bed occupied the site; replaced in the 1980s-90s by this corrugated-metal cabin, which is deteriorating. Access via the Port de Lers road from Tarascon, via Surba, Rabat-les-Trois-Seigneurs and La Freyte to the last car park, then a trail passing the Cabane d'Embanels and 300 m of zigzag through the forest.
