The place

Manned refuge at 2325 m in the central massif of the Picos de Europa national park (Cantabria, Spain). Remarkable historic structure: a 9 m² metal dome from an anti-aircraft battery of the US aircraft carrier USS Palau, saved from scrapping and hoisted to altitude to serve as a shelter for climbers. One of the highest manned refuges on the Iberian Peninsula. Managed by the Federación Cántabra de Deportes de Montaña y Escalada (FCDME), open from Easter to October. Capacity of 6 beds. About a 2-hour walk from the Fuente Dé cable car. Starting point for the nearby peaks Peña Vieja, Horcados Rojos and Pico Tesorero.
