Cabaña de Escobio
The place
Pastoral hut (summer cabaña) at 1368 m in the Macizo Occidental area or the eastern foothills of the Picos de Europa (Asturias, Spain), within the Picos de Europa National Park — Spain's first national park, created in 1918 (Parque Nacional de la Montaña de Covadonga). Notable position among the high-altitude "majadas" (traditional summer grazing grounds) scattered across the Asturian limestone valleys. Basic hut, either open access or reserved for shepherds depending on the season — built in characteristic local stone with a slate roof. Exceptional setting within the Picos de Europa: limestone peaks, spectacular gorges (Cares, Sella), glacial lakes of Covadonga (Enol, Ercina), iconic wildlife including the Cantabrian capercaillie (urogallo), bearded vulture, Iberian wolf and Cantabrian chamois. A stop on the trails linking Bulnes, Sotres, Caín and the high summer pastures — an area of great wild beauty, UNESCO biosphere since 2003.
