The place

Manned refuge at 2854 m on the south-west ridge of Rocciamelone (3538 m), in the Val di Susa (Piedmont, Italy). Italy's oldest alpine refuge. Not a CAI refuge: owned by the Parish of San Giusto di Susa, managed by Fulgido Tabone. Structure renovated in the 1970s, laid out over two floors, capacity of 80 beds in dormitories with bunk beds. Summer season only; it goes into its "long sleep" once winter arrives.
