The place

4-bunk DOC hut in the Lewis Pass Scenic Reserve (West Coast, Greymouth-Canterbury area), at 1,368 m. **New building completed in June 2025**, replacing an old 1970s shelter. Owned and maintained by the Backcountry Trust. The building incorporates solar panels and a digital sensor system to monitor building performance at this demanding site — do not touch the monitoring electronics or the volunteers' storage. Additional emergency space in case of bad weather. Several access routes depending on weather: 7-8 h over the exposed alpine tops from Lewis Pass in good weather, 4-5 h via Duchess Stream in wet weather, or 5-6 h via Rough Creek Track, or 4 h from Lucretia Biv. Bookable year-round. Rates until 30 June 2026: adult NZ$25, child NZ$12.50, children free.
