The place

Serviced twelve-bunk hut managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in the St James Conservation Area, Canterbury (South Island, New Zealand), at 794 metres elevation. Rates until 30 June 2026: NZ$25/night adult, NZ$12.50 youth (5-17 years), free under 5. Nearby camping NZ$10/night adult, NZ$5 youth. Online booking mandatory (bookings open through 30 June 2027), same-day booking possible until 8 pm subject to availability; phone bookings incur a NZ$10 service fee. Backcountry Hut Pass accepted only from 1 May to 30 September (out of season, camping permitted within a 200 m radius). Firewood supplied (stock may run out). Te Araroa walkers: a separate Te Araroa pass is required.
