Bog Inn Hut

The place

Standard DOC hut with 4 bunks in Pureora Forest Park (Waikato), at 821 m. Built in 1960 from local tōtara to house scientists studying the nearby peat bog, "The Bog". Retains its rustic character: walls of tōtara slabs adzed by hand, flooring made from sawmill offcuts. Recent preservation work: roof repairs, wood-burning stove, water tank. Reachable as part of a 3-day trek or via the Timber Trail. Tihoi and Bog Inn roads currently closed. No booking; pay by hut tickets or Backcountry Hut Pass (NZ$10/5 until 30 June 2026).
