The place

Basic 2-person DOC bivouac at 1,060 m in Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke's Bay, NZ), to the east between Lotkow Roadend and Little's Clearing. Built in 1963 by the NZ Forest Service. Long drop toilet, no other facilities. Free. Access ~1 h 30 from Little's Clearing or 1-1 h 30 from Lotkow Road. Black Birch Range: a popular hunting area, with an ongoing Pinus contorta eradication program. 4WD recommended; some parking areas restricted/closed (logging operations, terrain). Ideal for a weekend stage or short trip.
