Bivouac Renato Montaldo
The place
Italian bivouac at 3215 m near the summit of the Buc de Nubiera, on the ridge between the Col de Nubiera and the Brec de Chambeyron on the Franco-Italian border. Managed by the Genoa section of the Giovane Montagna association. 4 sleeping spaces with mattresses and blankets. No water source nearby. Italian access from Chiappera (Val Maira, province of Cuneo): climb to the Rifugio Stroppia (1h30) then approach the Col de Nubiera, finally a couloir to the south ridge leading to the bivouac. Difficulty PD, 6h climb. French access from Fouillouse (1886 m, Ubaye Valley): path to the Col de Nubiera then branch onto an obvious, steep scree couloir on the west face. Difficulty F, 4h climb.
Getting there
Deux itinéraires principaux mènent au Bivacco Renato Montaldo (3200 m), situé sur la crête reliant le Col de Nubiera au Brec de Chambeyron, près du Buc de Nubiera (3215 m). Depuis l'Italie (Chiappera, Val Maira) : départ du Campo Base (1677 m), passage par le Rifugio Stroppia (2260 m, environ 1h30), puis Col de Nubiera et canalino sur la crête sud, difficulté PD, environ 6 heures depuis Chiappera. Depuis la France (Fouillouse, vallée de l'Ubaye) : départ de Fouillouse (1886 m), sentier vers le Col de Nubiera puis canale ouest, difficulté F, environ 4 heures.
The setting
Le bivouac est situé en haute montagne (3200 m), sur la longue crête frontalière italo-française qui relie le Col de Nubiera au Brec de Chambeyron, à proximité du Buc de Nubiera (3215 m). Il domine deux vallées alpines : la Val Maira côté italien (Piémont) et la vallée de l'Ubaye côté français (via Fouillouse). Aucune eau n'est disponible à proximité immédiate.
