Bivouac Mario Jachia

The place

High-altitude bivouac of the Mont-Blanc massif, set on the south-east ridge of the Grandes Jorasses between the Aiguille de Tronchey and the Aiguille de l'Évêque, in the commune of Courmayeur (Italian Val Ferret). Built in 1961 and dedicated to the mountaineer Mario Jachia, it consists of a prefabricated wooden structure clad in sheet metal. Fitted with blankets and mattresses, but no running water or lighting. Reserved for mountaineers: access from the Tronchey chalets in about 8 hours over steep terrain, with climbing sections and tricky route-finding.
